However, the following year, having had 2 successful auditions for Sale of the Century with Nicholas Parsons, at last I received an invitation to go on the programme. At the time, I didn’t realise just how lucky I was as I actually took part in the very last series that came from Norwich.

We still had no car, and determined to win it, I recorded every programme I could, went through the questions looking for bankers (they always asked questions on capitals for example) and practised buzzing in early so that I would have the chance to answer the question first and so build up my score.

I needed 140 points to go for the car and scored 148, which was incredible especially as I bought three instant prizes along the way. The car was a dear little Mini and I won it, despite not being able to recognise which Strauss waltz Peter Fenn played on the organ (I’m tone deaf!). Luckily you only had to get 4 out of the 5 questions right that you were asked. The Mini stayed in the family for about 20 years, eventually being written off when someone went into the back of it when my daughter-in-law was driving it.
